P3P- I paid to hate this!

Persona 3 on PsP was released this week. For those of you that don't know anything about it, it's a port of a PS2 game. This is the third time Atlus has released the game in the US. The first being the original release, the second being the game+ expansion release titled Persona 3 FES, and the third being this PsP release.

To Atlus' credit, they added a ton of content to entice fans to buy it again. Having a portable version of the game is a definite plus, but you could also play as a female protagonist! They reworked Slinks for this, so maybe I'll get to date Akihiko! There's a hot dude working in the velvet room with Igor instead of Elizabeth! (If you think you see a guy when you go) PLUS! The pre-order bonus for this game was Junpei's hat! How cool is that?!?

Now, the downside-

The female path so far... is really ghetto.
While they did render a model for her in battles, they decided not to render her in the game world. Instead, they've got some wacky ass cursor/map thing you have to navigate with the analog pad. I don't know if this was done for processing/performance reasons, or if they just didn't want to re-do stuff for the female model. I haven't started a new game as the male protagonist, so I don't know if it's been changed in both scenarios. It's a little hard to get used to. Some of the targets you need to hit with your cursor are unnessesarily small (IE- THE BED! It is huge, but the spot you have to hit to interact with it is teeny tiny)

I suppose I can understand if these changes were made for performance reasons. The game looks damned good, and I didn't know you could just port over PS2 games like that XD. And it's not like SMT fans arn't used to strange overworld menu systems already. The shortcuts are a blessing. I really wish they'd used the same party AI as P4, though. The newer P4 party AI was much better, becasue if you'd inspected/figured out the enemy's weak point, the party AI would automatically go for the full knockdown. In P3, the party AI is a little retarded, and the inspection system is more cumbersome. It would have been nice if they'd updated that while they were changing everything for the PSP port.

Anyway... back to the female-specific stuff.
Mostly the "since you're a girl..." and "since you're female..." etc dialogue. You expect other characters to treat you a little differently based on your gender. Junpei starts off being nice, and Yukari yells at him for hitting on you. Aside from that, just about every other dialogue change has just been to add "since you're a girl" or "we sistahs gotta stick together" etc after every sentence. I realize most of the writers are probably male, and that's ok. They still manage to write a compelling dating sim appealing to women playing the men's side in the other games :P The insight into the world of women is somewhat lacking, though. The sports teams still wants to go do male bonding at the beef bowl, everyone fauns over you regardless, etc. I've noticed some new girls wandering around school, but I haven't been able to establish SLinks with them yet. It's too early. That being said, there doesn't seem to be any cattiness between the girls at school or anything like that. You're still playing the hot new guy that everyone loves and accepts, but with longer hair and boobs.

This is probably pretty harsh considering I'm still VERY early in the game, and I haven't had a chance to bring any SLinks beyond rank 2-3 yet. It'll be interesting to see what happens when I get closer to maxing out the male SLinks. Even then, though, I don't know that it'll be much different. In P3 & P4, when you max out an SLink with a girl, she becomes very upfront about letting you in her pants. If they just reverse that for girls, it will be a kind of negative experience, huh? :P I'm interested in seeing what happens. I haven't decided if I should go for Akihito or Junpei.. or the new hot guy in the velvet room. I want to see Junpei get flustered, or Akihito soften up.. but mysterious hot guy in velvet room!

I dunno. I know I should give it a chance. I plan on playing a little longer and seeing what happens. So far, though, between getting used to the PsP port changes and the girl's side dialogue, I'm having trouble getting into it.

I should also mention, I finally picked P4 up and beat it :P I was on the last boss, srsly :X
I started a second cycle right about when P3P came out, and I've kind of dropped it one month in to give this PsP port a try. At least I can say I finally finished it, though! (I didn't get very far in the Persona1 PsP port before I dropped it for somthing else.. oops!)
