I read on ANN that a bunch of publishers have banded together to crack down on scanlation sites. I have mixed feelings about this, really. Pulling licensed titles is fine, really. Unfortunately, there are series I read like dragonball BLEACH that have been running for so long that if I wait for the US to catch up, it'll be 5 years from now. For series like that, it's nice to read a fan translation right after it comes out. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the people who read these/watch fansubs/etc arn't like us, and don't bother to buy the series when they come out over here. On the other hand, there are a lot of those people that wouldn't pay in the first place anyway.
I'll be a little more upset if they run around shutting whole sites down just because they have titles like Bleach, though. These sites also have unlicensed fan-translated titles. I'm pretty set in my ways, too. Even if a whole site is taken down, there will always be some other site hosting it, or hosting torrents, etc, but the sites get a little scarier and a little more dangerous each time a more reliable one gets shut down.
Oh, and in a little more somber news... I haven't seen ANYONE mention this ANYWHERE, so it kind of came as a shock to me.
Peter Steele of Type O Negative passed away. :( The only details I could find on the death was a short footnote copy/pasted to just about every notice I saw "Peter Steele died of heart failure on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48. Prior to his death, Steele had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music"
So no more Type O Negative :( While I heard Nathan Explosion's (Dethklok/metalocalypse) personality was inspired by Danzig, I always thought of Peter Steele when it came to the character design. Sitting around listening to "Black No. 1" in my best freind's bedroom was like... the essense of what highschool was for me. I will miss him, and the band :(
