In between cleaning spurts, though, I've actually been cooking a lot lately. Last week, I made some cornbread. It turned out ok, but I noticed after I'd added it that my baking powder expired in 2004. This is kind of a problem if I decide I want to make somthing else that needs to actually fluff up and rise XD. The cornbread was fine, but I think if I had good baking powder, it may have been better.
Two days ago, I made some beef stroganoff from scratch. My dad used to make it pretty often, and while I never learned I missed it, so I bought the stuff to make some. Matt has a thing against mushrooms, so I had to be clever about it. He says he doesn't mind the taste or smell, but he hates the texture, so instead of big chunks, I has to chop them up super tiny so he wouldn't notice them. It worked :D It did turn out well, and he ended up really liking it. Score one for me against a picky eater!
Last night, I made some really awesome omlettes. Since I had all those mushrooms, and didn't use them all in the stroganoff I got a really great idea for an omlette. Matt wouldn't have any of it, though, so I had to make them seperately so I could bury tons of mushrooms in mine :P
Today I finished off the mushrooms by making something I don't really have a name for, but was good anyway XD The ORIGINAL idea was to be super lazy, buy a big bag of egg noodles, and a bag of the crock pot shit from the freezer isle that has chicken, dumplings, and mixed veggies in it. Then, make the crock pot stuff, put it on top of noodles, and eat it for days. They don't make it/carry it anymore at our store, though, but by then I was bent on having somthing with egg noodles and chicken. Soooo.. I got all the stuff for stroganoff to use with 1/2 the bag of egg noodles, and somthing with chicken for the other half. I sautee'ed some onion and the leftover chopped mushrooms in some butter& a little olive oil& garlic, then I dumped the chicken in and browned it.. tossed on some paprika and drowned it all in white wine XD YAY WINE! I cooked that down, then added some more.. then cooked it down, tossed in a little flour and ate it on noodles, with some steamed broccoli& carrots on the side. It was awesome. I was really afraid it wasn't going to turn out for crap, though, and made it for lunch instead of dinner. All this means is that Matt wasn't subjected to it in case it was bad. But it was good, and he didn't get any XD XD XD
Oh well, there's leftovers in the fridge. I'm out of mushrooms, though, so I can't really do it again without hitting the store, and then I'd have way too many mushrooms again, since it's not somthing I normally keep around.
When I was at the store, I bought some better rice, though. So now the plan is to try rissoto again with better wine and better rice. I'm kinda low on the cheese department, though, and I forgot that I was all out of saffron, so I'm probably going to have to hit up the store anyway. One of these days, I will get the damned rissoto right. I have such trouble with it. It always has the right texture, and looks great and wonderful. I really enjoy cooking it. It's hard to describe, but it's really calming and enjoyable to stand there and stir it for stupid ammounts of time and watch it slowly do what it's supposed to. Unfortunately, (and probably due to the poor quality ingredients) while the texture is down pat, it always ends up tasting like utter shit, and I have to throw it away. This is like.. the complete opposite of my poor baklava catastrophies, where it tasted good but the texture was completely off. gah. I swear, I fail at KITCHEN.
Oh yeah, I also got tons of stuff to make two quiches sometime this week, but I remembered my fucking electric beaters are broken and I'm going to have to do things the hard way until I get another set. Matt says he's sorry he broke them, but I told him he's the one suffering from lack of quiche :P Maybe I'll ask him to make me pancakes XD
I also bought a sack of potatoes, so I can use all those ingredients I got for all that other crap to make me a nice big casserole dish of au gratin potatoes. Matt hates them, and I don't know why! I put cheese, ham and potatoes in a thinger with some creamy sauce and it's great, and he won't eat it. WTF. Anyway.. I think I want to make some potato salad, too. I guess that's summer food, but I haven't had any in what seems like forever. He probably wont' eat that either, but I don't care. I could eat potato salad 3 meals a day. That crap is awesome.
