Cooking week?
I'm usually in a rush to get the house clean around this time of year. If I was having one, my party would have been this weekend, so I'd be rushing around like a retard trying to get things clean. We are having company over Sat afternoon, though, so I guess it's pretty much the same, but I've been trying to whip the house into shape and get things looking nice for when a few of Matt's freinds visit. I've never met them, so I don't quite feel like I can leave the house as is :P
In between cleaning spurts, though, I've actually been cooking a lot lately. Last week, I made some cornbread. It turned out ok, but I noticed after I'd added it that my baking powder expired in 2004. This is kind of a problem if I decide I want to make somthing else that needs to actually fluff up and rise XD. The cornbread was fine, but I think if I had good baking powder, it may have been better.
Two days ago, I made some beef stroganoff from scratch. My dad used to make it pretty often, and while I never learned I missed it, so I bought the stuff to make some. Matt has a thing against mushrooms, so I had to be clever about it. He says he doesn't mind the taste or smell, but he hates the texture, so instead of big chunks, I has to chop them up super tiny so he wouldn't notice them. It worked :D It did turn out well, and he ended up really liking it. Score one for me against a picky eater!
Last night, I made some really awesome omlettes. Since I had all those mushrooms, and didn't use them all in the stroganoff I got a really great idea for an omlette. Matt wouldn't have any of it, though, so I had to make them seperately so I could bury tons of mushrooms in mine :P
Today I finished off the mushrooms by making something I don't really have a name for, but was good anyway XD The ORIGINAL idea was to be super lazy, buy a big bag of egg noodles, and a bag of the crock pot shit from the freezer isle that has chicken, dumplings, and mixed veggies in it. Then, make the crock pot stuff, put it on top of noodles, and eat it for days. They don't make it/carry it anymore at our store, though, but by then I was bent on having somthing with egg noodles and chicken. Soooo.. I got all the stuff for stroganoff to use with 1/2 the bag of egg noodles, and somthing with chicken for the other half. I sautee'ed some onion and the leftover chopped mushrooms in some butter& a little olive oil& garlic, then I dumped the chicken in and browned it.. tossed on some paprika and drowned it all in white wine XD YAY WINE! I cooked that down, then added some more.. then cooked it down, tossed in a little flour and ate it on noodles, with some steamed broccoli& carrots on the side. It was awesome. I was really afraid it wasn't going to turn out for crap, though, and made it for lunch instead of dinner. All this means is that Matt wasn't subjected to it in case it was bad. But it was good, and he didn't get any XD XD XD
Oh well, there's leftovers in the fridge. I'm out of mushrooms, though, so I can't really do it again without hitting the store, and then I'd have way too many mushrooms again, since it's not somthing I normally keep around.
When I was at the store, I bought some better rice, though. So now the plan is to try rissoto again with better wine and better rice. I'm kinda low on the cheese department, though, and I forgot that I was all out of saffron, so I'm probably going to have to hit up the store anyway. One of these days, I will get the damned rissoto right. I have such trouble with it. It always has the right texture, and looks great and wonderful. I really enjoy cooking it. It's hard to describe, but it's really calming and enjoyable to stand there and stir it for stupid ammounts of time and watch it slowly do what it's supposed to. Unfortunately, (and probably due to the poor quality ingredients) while the texture is down pat, it always ends up tasting like utter shit, and I have to throw it away. This is like.. the complete opposite of my poor baklava catastrophies, where it tasted good but the texture was completely off. gah. I swear, I fail at KITCHEN.

Oh yeah, I also got tons of stuff to make two quiches sometime this week, but I remembered my fucking electric beaters are broken and I'm going to have to do things the hard way until I get another set. Matt says he's sorry he broke them, but I told him he's the one suffering from lack of quiche :P Maybe I'll ask him to make me pancakes XD

I also bought a sack of potatoes, so I can use all those ingredients I got for all that other crap to make me a nice big casserole dish of au gratin potatoes. Matt hates them, and I don't know why! I put cheese, ham and potatoes in a thinger with some creamy sauce and it's great, and he won't eat it. WTF. Anyway.. I think I want to make some potato salad, too. I guess that's summer food, but I haven't had any in what seems like forever. He probably wont' eat that either, but I don't care. I could eat potato salad 3 meals a day. That crap is awesome.

I am STILL searching for a great Chicken & Dumplings recipe... I think I've got a decent one (altho still not QUITE what I'm looking for) but it has one issue. I'm not sure how to make good dumplings. ;_; I usually do like you said and just make noodles (often I get the really think ones) and that's a pretty decent dish, but I still wanna make the real thing one day. I also wanna find a recipe for a really good casserole... not sure how I'd define that tho, but I'm certain my theory of that differs wildly from other people's thoughts.

Congrats on the discovery tho. If you were remotely careful with the process, at least you could (in theory) make it again, so "yay".

(Hmmm... I also haven't made beef stroganoff in a LONG time, I need to do that sometime)

Dumplings are easy because they're pretty much just flour. The trick is in how you cook them. IIRC, when my dad would make them, he'd have the pot at a rolling boil, and he had this gyoza scoop he used. It was like.. a long flat bamboo handle with a gold colored wire paddle at the end. I wasn't like a scoop, but it was concave at least. Anyway, you drop a dumpling in and boil it, and fish it out with the paddle. Most chicken& dumplings recipies dont' care if you make big dumplings and cut them up or whatever. The ones my dad would make were about golf ball sized. I'd thought about making chicken& dumplings from scratch, but when I thought about having to make the dumplings from scratch and THEN make the chicken& stewy shit without a crock pot, I got super lazy and just made chicken& wine. I know I could do it again, though. After I figured it out it was super easy

Man, that all sounds so good! I really need to clean up the kitchen and do some actual cooking now that it's getting cold and therefore conducive to cooking tasty things. I picked up all of the stuff to make baklava a few days ago, but I've been too lazy or busy to actually do it.

My brother does the mushroom thing, too. He claims that mushrooms taste like snails, but as they essentially taste like whatever they're cooked in, I can only assume that his real problem with them is the texture (which is understandable - they're one of the few slimy foods that I like). But as mushrooms are TASTY and go in lots of things, it's a real problem! Chopping them up is a really good idea - I bet he wouldn't even notice them. Hmm...

You should pick a weekend to come up and we'll cook :D
Because you know it's really hard to make good food when you have to make tiny portions >:O
I also say this because I want you to make your baklava and bring it to me to eat XD XD XD

I have a sneaking suspicion that I just can't make it at my house because my oven can't keep a consistant temperature at the higher temps. I think the oven is from the 50's and doesn't really work as well as it used to XD

But yeah, we can totally cook all sorts of shit! And we can make pot-o-shit and you and I can pig out. It'll be great. Matt might have some if we don't go into too much detail about what's in it :X haha

It IS! I'm always cooking for one and it SUCKS! I usually end up foisting the leftovers off on my coworkers or having tons of leftovers, but that doesn't work for everything.

Actually, there is a sort of a plan, maybe...

I may make some baklava for a friend's birthday next week. Are you still interested in going to see Eraserhead the pretty Russian baritone in Dallas in about a week and a half (the 6th, I think)? The plan would be for me to drive up around lunchtime, pick you up, go to Dallas, watch Prettyboy sing his lungs out, maybe get some Mr. Max's WITHOUT having to drive all the way from Fort Worth, and drive back to Waco. I'd drive back to Austin in the morning for work on Wednesday afternoon. But my point is that, if I make baklava, I can save some for you and bring it up, and if you like it (DUH, it's baklava), I can get you the recipe or maybe we can have Cooking Weekend on some other weekend). And then we can figure out if your oven is jacked up or what.

That sounds great! I know we were planning to see that pompous ass (<3) anyway, so it works for me :D Hopefully Mr. Max's will be open this time? XD

Anyway, you know how it was when I tried baklava last year. There's so much outside the recipie that can go wrong... and I'm pretty sure I had the recipie itself nailed. BUT OF COURSE I WANT SOME! :X

He is a pompous ass. <3 And they'd better be open this time! Jerks!

Now that I'm planning to make it, just watch - I'm going to end up completely screwing it up. >_<; NO PRESSURE!

Castlevania for PSP is out now.
The remake SO isn't just Rondo.
After you rescue maria, you can play as her, and she has her own library of sub weapons. (They're all birds and animals that you throw at the monsters) And instead of all food items being meat (like they are for uh.. everyone else) They're things like cakes and parfaits XD
It is like rondo, though.. if you miss the key and don't go to the right spot to rescue her, you've fucked your game up& can't go back, I think? I don't know. It lets you select the stage when you load, so maybe?
On the other hand, it's tough remembering everything, and they've changed quite a bit. I keep dying when the minotaur boss is at like 5% HP and I want to chuck the handheld across the room (which is a bad idea, because it would certainly break it)... But.. I HAVE TO BEAT IT OR I CAN'T PLAY SYMPHONY ZOMGZ

Would you believe I preordered it? XD I'm SUCH a dork - I still don't even have a PSP (work announced a few days ago that they might not be able to keep us employed for the next 6 months, so that might have to wait). The preorder gift was kind of lame, though. Oh, well.

OMG I totally want to play it, though. I'm taking a break from Tartarus grinding in Persona 3 (the game told me that I don't need to study anymore because I'm a genius XD) and I've been playing Crotch of Darkness over in the hopes of getting pumpkin this time. I still don't think it's going to happen, but you never know. And this game is just as laugh-out-loud homoerotic as I remember. It's SCARY. Also, it seems that the guy who voices Akihiko also does Isaac and Mulberry - I am officially scarred for life. D:

What preorder bonus did you get? They didn't give me jack shit. They've taken a turn for treating me like crap at my gamestop, which means none of the employees know me anymore, and they treat me like everyone else. That would be fine, but their normal customer service is absolute crap. I know, because I worked there XD

I ordered from the website since I wasn't in any great hurry, and they sent me this little plastic side-scrolling Belmont figurine painted to look 8 bit (pixels and crap). I was hoping for something more along the line of the DS release - music or SOMETHING like that, at least. No big loss. You can have mine if you want it. XD
